CLOS CRISTAL DPO SAUMUR CHAMPIGNY 2018 CLOS CRISTAL

Clos Cristal offers the promise of a great wine with character and a unique story. The story of Antoine Cristal, who had the ingenious idea of growing vines through a wall. Today, it’s the soul of Clos Cristal that lives on in every bottle, embodying men united by a common desire: the audacity to create, to invent, and to enjoy that French culture of living pleasure.

Are you familiar with the unique Clos cristal technique developed at the end of the 19th century?

These 3km of walls allow the vines to flourish: the vines are planted to the north, the vines pass through holes dug in the walls and the bunches are exposed to the south. “Feet cool, belly sunny” as he used to say!

– Background: Antoine Cristal, born in 1837 in Turquant, near Saumur, was not a winemaker by trade. After making his fortune in textiles, he returned to settle in his native region.

– The ambition: to compete with the greatest red wines, a challenge at the time for a wine-growing region known for its whites.

– The aim: to achieve a balance between light/heat and shade/coolness.

– The benefits: grapes ripen more quickly and wines are more complex and intense.

Located in the Saumur-Champigny appellation area, Clos Cristal was created in 1886, and its vineyards offer an atypical vision of wine, which from the outset has advocated the cultivation of a living pleasure. In 1928, Mr Cristal donated the Clos that bears his name to the Hospices de Saumur. Today, Clos Cristal is owned by the EDONIS winegrowers’ collective, which was behind the creation of the Saumur-Champigny DPO.

PRESENTATION
Clos Cristal was founded by Antoine Cristal in 1890 in the commune of Souzay-Champigny. Behind its walls and gates lie 10 hectares of vines. Over 3km of walls have been erected on the estate, through which the vines have grown and flourished for 130 years. The vine planted to the north grows along the wall. Passing through a hole, the shoots, foliage and bunches grow along the exposed, south-facing wall. With their feet cool and their heads in the sun, the vines gain up to a month in ripeness!
TERROIR
The Clos Cristal terroir is composed of tuffeau chalk bedrock dating back to the Cretaceous era. In terms of soils, we move progressively from one terroir to another, from sandy to clay-limestone, which allows for great complexity in the wine’s structure, balance and aromatics. Finally, all these terroirs are surrounded by walls and protected from northerly winds by a wood, giving us a very specific microclimate found only at Clos Cristal.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and then sorted again on a table to eliminate bunches of uneven maturity. All the selected bunches are gently destemmed to keep only the berries and eliminate the stalks. No sulfur is added during vatting. During maceration, which lasts an average of 30 days, the grapes are pumped over a few times to extract color and delicate tannins, and then infused into the fermenting wine until the end of maceration to bring structure, fatness and finesse. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vats, before Clos Cristal is filled into 500L French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 18 months, allowing the already delicate tannins to develop their patina and bring out the wine’s complexity. After this period in our troglodyte cellars, it’s time for bottling.
